At the heart of Eternal Rest is the back of a woman's head, her face turned away, surrounded by a flourishing cluster of vibrant flowers. Small birds, nestled among the blossoms, emerge as delicate symbols of life and freedom. The contrast between the flowers, full of vitality, and the deep, almost void-like black background creates a striking tension. The natural grain of the wood panel subtly shows through, particularly in the depiction of the woman's skin, lending it a raw, earthy texture that evokes the transient, organic nature of the human body.

As part of a series in which Alexandra Gallagher explores death, decay, and regeneration, this painting feels like a contemplation of existence's duality. The peaceful stillness  is set against the dynamic, living presence of nature entwined within the figure.

The painting eloquently captures the essence of mortality, reflecting on the delicate beauty that emerges from life's cyclical nature.
